Meet Recap

Rockford Christian has three individual qualifiers and one relay team qualifier for the IHSA State Meet! Returning to 1A competition, the RCSTF girls had a strong day scoring in several events, winning the mile, and performing with season bests.

In the field events, Sydney Halversen (9) qualified after taking a second place finish in the High Jump, clearing 4′ 11″. This effort was a lifetime PR and places her second in program history. Halversen’s previous best was 4’10”. Taking third in the event was captain Natasha Ferrero (10), clearing 4′ 9″. This will be Halversen’s first appearance at the IHSA state meet for track; she was an alternate for the 2015 girls cross country team.

The second individual qualifier was captain Taylor Gorski (10) in the 100m Hurdles. Gorksi’s 16.97 effort was above the qualifying mark, but a late race surge pushed her to the second place position, granting an auto-qualifying finish. All of Gorksi’s performances since the Matt Wulf Invitational have been below 17 seconds, and despite the unfavorable conditions, she continued the streak. This will be Gorski’s first appearance at the IHSA state meet.

Coming into the event off of a double, Madison Franseen (9) won the 1600m with a time of 5:27 in the deteriorating weather conditions found late in the sectional meet. Franseen tactically raced the event, sitting in second place the first two laps of the race, only to make a strong move after the half mile mark. The second half of the race was all Franseen out front. This will be Franseen’s first appearance at the IHSA state meet, but she is a seasoned veteran to championship competition. Franseen has competed at the IESA track and cross country state meets, as well as being the front runner and all-state for the 2015 RCXC girls cross country team.

The final qualifying event was the 4×800 relay consisting of captain Kate Smith (12), captain Elise Combs (12), Andrea Zwonitzer (10), and Madison Franseen (9). Friday’s sectional was the first time since the quartet had run together on the same relay since the Illinois Top Times indoor state meet in March. Going into the sectional, the group had run a 10:13 equivalent as individuals. Running 2:31, 2:38, 2:38, and a blazing 2:23, respectively, the group finished second at 10:12.01. This will the first appearance at the IHSA state meet for all of the girls; however, all four were on the varsity squad for the 2015 state qualifying cross country team. Be sure to look for a fast finish on Thursday!

Other highlights included PRs by:
Cecily Holliday (3200m, 1600m)
Francine Breuning (LJ, 200m)
Lindy Dokken (800m)
Miriam Safford (400m)
Lily Marshall (400m)
4x100m Relay (Spades, Ferst, Johnson, Breuning)
4x200m Relay (Heffner, Ferrero, Benink, Hollis)
4x400m Relay (Benink, Ferrero, Smith, Hollis)

The YOU KNOW! award was given to two different girls on the team. The first award was given to Sydney Halversen for not only her state-qualifying effort, for a continued dedication to her event despite several highs and lows all season. Halversen currently stands second all time for RCSTF outdoor girls, and hopes to take down the school record this Thursday.

The second YOU KNOW! award was given to junior Katie Childs who made the transition from manager to thrower during the indoor season. Despite several frustrating weeks of failing to match her performances in practice, Childs had a breakthrough PR of 25-00.50 on her first throw. Childs has stood alone in the throwing events all year as the only girl, and her commitment to be better made her an obvious choice for the award.
