Game Recap

Senior Jacob Gugle hit a clutch, game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Rockford Christian varsity baseball team to a conference championship.

Gugle lined a 1-2 curveball to the gap in left-center field to score Jake McClellan with the decisive run for the 3-2 victory. McClellan reached on an error and moved to third when Nolan Gazouski was intentionally walked and Alec Powell drew another walk to load the bases for Gugle.

Richmond-Burton scored a run in the first, but the home team plated two in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 lead. McClellan walked and moved to third on a double by Gazouski. A sacrifice fly by Powell, scored McClellan and a two-out single by Gugle gave the Royal Lions the lead. Powell was impressive on the mound, pitching seven innings and allowing only three hits, while striking out nine. Gazouski pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win. He struck out the side to set the stage for Gugle’s heroics.

Powell and Gugle finished with two hits apiece for the winners who improved to 13-0 in the conference and 27-3 overall.
