Meet Recap

Winnebago, Illinois — The Royal Lions won their fifth meet of the season against the nine team field at the Mike Mowen Invitational hosted by Winnebago. The squad amassed 164 points winning seven events, setting two meets records, and breaking three school records.

The 4x800m unit of Brian Smith (Sr.), Nick Monkemeyer (Sr.), Josiah Vogel (So.), and Riley Wells (Fr.) continued their record setting ways winning in 8:06.87. The mark eclipses the previous meet record of 8:12.30 set by an RCSTF squad in 2015.

Quinn Halversen (Jr.) broke the meet and school record in the long jump with a 20′ 10″ leap.

The 4x200m relay made up of Jacob Kennay (So.), Nick McMahon (Sr.), Chase Roche (Jr.) and Halversen ran a season best of 1:32.87 and finished second. The time should rate them seventh in 1A according to the latest Athletic.net rankings.

Also improving their state ranking to eighth with a season best of 3:32.39 was the 4x400m quartet of Smith, Jack Smith (Sr.), Wells, and Vogel.

Brady Irwin won the triple jump with a leap of 40′ 5″ and took second place in the high jump clearing 6′ 2″.

Monkemeyer won the 1600m in 4:37.50 and Brent Brunner (Fr.) ran a personal best of 4:49.51 finishing third.

Pat McMahon lower his personal best and moved up the RCSTF all time list in the 300m hurdlers with a 42.53 effort. Brock Paquin also saw a personal best in the 110 hurdlers running 18.22.

The Frosh/Soph record in the 4x200m relay was broken by Sal Mendez (So.), Luke Joiner (Fr.), Kody Page (Fr.), and Nicolas Capriola (Fr.). The talented group of underclass men ran 1:39.76 – a time that would have been fast enough to finish fourth in the varsity division.

The Royal Lions throwers also a good day. Connor Roche (Jr.) broken into the program all time lists throwing 43′ 9″ and finished 2nd. Jaden Ferlita (Fr.) did the same with a 115′ 2″ toss in the discus.

Both RCSTF pole vaulters Ben Thomas (So.) and Toby McIntosh (So.) placed with personal records of 9′ 7″ and 9′ 1″ respectively.

Jack Kurtz (Jr.) placed third in the 800m with a personal best. Will Mecklenburg (Jr.) along with Cal Granite (Fr.) battled the heat in the 3200m and finish third and fourth.

The Royal Lions track team will begin championship competition next Thursday, May 12 at the Big Northern East Conference Championship hosted by Richmond-Burton. Meet details will be posted early next week.
