Meet Recap

The 2015 Rockford Christian boys cross country team qualified for the IHSA 2A State Meet!

The Royal Lions competed in the rain and slop and mud and hills at Emricson Park on Saturday, October 31 at the Woodstock North 2A Sectional. The squad finished 4th place with 154 points out of 18 teams to lock in their top 5 qualifying position. This is the ninth time that the Rockford Christian boys cross country team has qualified for the IHSA State Championship, but their first qualification in the 2A division.

The team was lead by co-captain Nick Monkemeyer (Sr.) who had been struggling to overcome illness over the past three weeks. Monkemeyer traversed the muddy hills of Emricson Park in a time of 16:21 and finished 15th place in the 140-man field. The Royal Lion pack had the best 1-5 split of the competition and was separated by just 54 seconds. The pack made up Riley Wells (Fr.), Josiah Vogel (So.), and Ethan Volk (Sr.) ran 16:42, 16:49, and 16:55 respectively. Noah Wells (Jr.) closed the door as the team’s fifth man in 17:15 for 50th place. Wells was only bested by the #5 runners of team champions Grayslake Central and 3rd place Kaneland.

Jack Kurtz (Jr.) won the 6 man tie break for Rockford Christian over the Crystal Lake Central team. Kurtz, who finished 56th in 17:22, was responsible for creating the tie in the first place by bumping CLC’s 5th man back to 57th place. Andy Volk (Fr.) had a breakthrough performance in 17:27 and finished 60th – his closest finish to the pack for the season.

It was truly an outstanding day for Monkemeyer, Wells, Vogel, Volk, Wells, Kurtz, and Volk. They ran with stoic determination and faith.
