Meet Recap

The Rockford Christian girls cross country team had a solid fifth place performance on Saturday September 26 at the Oakhurst Forest Preserve. The 2015 Charger Classic Invitational, hosted by Aurora Central Catholic, set the stage for a weary and sore girls RCXC squad to rise above lingering pains and start preparing for a late season push for championship competition. The squad opted to rest Walsh, Halversen, and Kissick for recovery from minor injuries, and Cain due to illness.

The 3mi course was shortened slightly before the start of the first race due to concerns about the safety of the opening turn, making times on average 5-10 seconds faster than the normal course.

Coming off her school record performance two weeks ago at the First to the Finish Invitational, freshman Madison Franseen ran a similar time at 18:39, falling to Liz (18:03) from Aurora, and Hill from Antoich (18:32). After the meet, Franseen commented that she felt like she still had more in the tank, not realizing the location of the finish line was closer than expected during the late stages of the race. Franseen’s efforts put her as the second fastest freshman in the Blue division, with the third best freshman being Kral from St. Francis at 19:40.

Other notable performances included senior Carolynn Claussen’s personal best at 20:34, breaking the 21-minute barrier for the first time. One year ago, Claussen’s time was 27:27. Freshman Cecily Holliday also moved up to the fifth fastest freshman of all time with her performance of 21:03. She also breeches the top 25 all time. And freshman Annika Peterson also had an outstanding performance with a 45 second personal best finishing at 22:45, breaking the 23-minute barrier for the first time and finding her self only seven seconds from tenth place on the top 10 fastest freshman all time.

The team will travel to the Mane Event hosted by Lisle High School on Saturday October 3. The girls program will be running two squads: a 2.5mi fresh-soph squad comprised of Franseen, Zwonitzer, Holliday, Peterson, Marshall, Halversen, and Kissick; and a varsity 5k squad comprised of Claussen, Smith, Walsh, Combs, Harris, and Cain.
